Just Another Pipe-dream
Brick slips, cement, waste pipe and elbow,
two pipe wall clips, funnel, duct tape, hot plate,
Saucepan, supply of water, bread
Just Another Pipe-dream was one of my degree show pieces. It looks at the failure of aspirations. Unrealistic hopes and fantasies are embodied in the nonsensical structure, where the steam from the boiling water in the saucepan very slowly acts to dissolve the mortar in the brick wall, attempting to liberate the viewers from its confines. This was inspired by a prison break method of dousing a brick wall in water and then soaking the moisture up with bread and reapplying the water repeatedly to the wall.
However, the one active pipe only acts on a section of the wall, giving the viewer the chance to see what is beyond but not reach it. The rest of the waste pipes face away.
